The name "Balkan" conjures frightening images for many people, especially since the wars in Former Yugoslavia and since the word "balkanization" has become common in the English lexicon. Unfortunately, many people, both inside and outside of the peninsula, view the Balkans as a backward bloody place: Europe's dark corner. But the Balkans are also a place of rich musical and folk traditions, sunny coasts, beautiful islands, ancient cities, hospitable people, spectacular natural features, lively arts, delicious cuisines, and more.

This is a tribe for people who have lived in, visited, or just are interested in the Balkans to discuss history, culture, languages, film, etc. Members are also encouraged to contribute to the picture gallery.

I would like to restrict the conversation of this group to the following countries and regions: Slovenia (not technically Balkan, but too close and good to ignore), Croatia, Serbia (and Vojvodina & Kosovo), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Macendonia (FYRM), Albania, Romania and Bulgaria. Though they are also in the Balkans, I think that there are plenty of resources for European Turkey and Greece so I prefer to keep postings on them minimal except where relevant to discussion about the rest of the Balkans. Also, Hungary is not part of the Balkans, but may be included in discussions where relevant to Balkan countries because of it's close ties to the region.
